Dave Stanley, a Gainesville resident of four years, is the owner of a LEED Platinum certified home. Stanley’s home features a rain catchment system, an insulated roof, and now a 6 kW photovoltaic system, enough to supplement 60% of his energy consumption for the next 25 years. Power Production Management (PPM) installed the solar panels that contributed to the platinum-level certification.
LEED certifications categorize green buildings into four rankings: certified, silver, gold and platinum. According to Stanley, reasons for pursuing LEED certification include lowering your carbon footprint, lowering energy costs, and increasing the value of your home.
“By using LEED to build our new home, when the time comes to sell, the prospect buyer doesn’t have to take our word on the quality of the build and the energy efficiency that has been incorporated into the building,” Stanley said.
The concern for rising energy prices has brought demand for alternatives to traditional utility companies like GRU. Alachua County now has the highest energy prices in the state and are expected to increase.
Stanley originally planned to build his home with the intention of incorporating solar, but the cost scared him away. Since then, the price of solar fell within reach and Stanley decided to invest. Along with the energy savings, Stanley will receive a 30% federal tax credit.
The transition to solar energy is taking place in Gainesville. Since 2009, PPM has completed over 30 projects in Gainesville, including notable work with United Refrigeration, Westside Baptist Church, the Continuum, and Beta Theta Pi at UF.
