Brent Salley is an alumnus of the University of Florida specializing in mathematics and the esteemed President/CEO of Precision Glass Inc. in Gainesville, Florida. Brent is a paragon of innovation and strategic thinking in glass storefront building construction, commercial glazing, curtain walls, sunrooms, skylights, and commercial door glass. Building his business since 1989, he’s been interested in solar energy from the very start. Subsequently, he installed solar PV systems with PPM Solar on multiple commercial and residential properties he owns across Florida over the last twelve years.
Brent’s transition to solar energy is rooted in meticulous financial analysis and a perceptive understanding of market trends. He embodies the ethos of a trendsetting, environmentally-conscious business leader in the glass industry. He applied those same business concepts when calculating the financial return of solar for the next 25 or more years. His mantra, “The numbers just made sense,” reflects a decision that is just as pragmatic as it is sustainable-minded.
Brent Salley’s decision to integrate solar energy into his Florida properties was not a leap of faith but that of logic. He already knew the sun would continue to rise. It was his mathematics background and business acumen approach to solar energy that made his decision as much calculated as it was visionary.
Solar – An Economic Numbers Game
The compelling financial benefits were at the core of Brent’s decision to go solar on his various properties. The high electricity rates in Florida presented a significant expense for his residential and commercial properties. Brent saw solar energy as an alternative power source and a strategic investment. Although initially costly, solar panel installation promised long-term savings that have paid off.
The economic incentives were hard to ignore when Brent installed his first solar energy system in 2012. For instance, Brent’s initial investment of $197,000 in solar installation was significantly cushioned by a 30% tax credit. Furthermore, the feed-in tariff program compensated him for excess energy produced and added a revenue stream. This savvy financial planning showcased Brent’s ability to see beyond the upfront costs to the long-term gains.
The GRU feed-in-tariff program ended shortly after Brent’s first installation in 2012, and the solar investment model has changed since that time. But Brent calculated the return on solar investment and knew it was a wise personal and business decision to add solar to his other properties. So, over the past ten years, Brent has installed a total of 148,640 watts of solar PV across nine properties under the care of PPM Solar of Florida since 2012.
Beyond the Balance Sheet
The financial return does not solely drive Brent’s move to solar. As a leader in his community, he also understood the value of sustainable practices. By choosing solar energy, Brent significantly reduced the carbon footprint of his properties, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable environment. This transition reflected a growing trend among businesses focusing on profitability and their ecological impact.
