Solar for homes

Commercial Solar Installations

Capitalize on unused space with solar — utilities are essential expenses that can rob a business of its cash flow. Bringing your energy expenses under control with the use of commercial solar power is an effective, yet often overlooked, method of benefitting your bottom line. If you are a business in Jacksonville, Florida looking to go solar… don’t wait! With record-low prices and a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for solar that is one-third the cost of traditional utility prices, there has never been a better time than now to go solar!

Solar for business

Tesla Powerwall

As amazing and wonderful as solar power is, complete energy independence can be difficult to obtain without the assistance of a battery backup. This is mainly due to the fact that every system installed in Florida must be tied to the grid, meaning that when the grid goes down, so does your solar system. The Tesla Powerwall can detect an outage, disconnect from the grid, and automatically restore power to your home in a fraction of a second. You will not even notice that the power went out, keeping your home up and running without any interruption. Find out about pricing for Tesla Powerwall in Florida!

PPM Solar installed a 6.4 kW system on the roof of my new home in St. Augustine in June, 2023. The system was competitively priced and the project was implemented in a prompt and professional manner. The panels have so far performed flawlessly and have generated all of my electricity.

Cashflow woes? -- BEWARE new customers! I signed a contract on 2/7/23 for a solar system costing just over $150K for our home in Levy County. I paid over half that amount upfront to cover material ordering costs and to put the project into motion. It's now almost 6 months with no sign of materials being delivered or anything happening. Then yesterday I received an invoice for over $50K when no payment is yet due (since no materials have been delivered to my home). I called PPM and spoke with Alex Khokhlov who said they had big commercial jobs -- University of Florida and Duke -- ahead of me. After waiting for almost 6 months with nothing happening, I was also told by Alex that if I accelerated payments, my job would be done in the next 30 days vs. 60 days if I paid according the contract payment scheduled tied to benchmarks. Will my solar installation ever get done or will I ever see the $82,132.80 that PPM took on deposit? Wait and see. In the meantime, buyer beware. Update on 7/25/23, AlexZ said that if I didn't accelerate payments faster than the contract required, that the project would still get done within 60 days, so by the end of September, 8 months after the contract was signed. We'll see. Will add progress reports every two weeks. Update on 8/14/23: building permit was issued on 7/31/23. Update on 9/1/23. We've been promised the following by PPM Solar: solar panels to be installed on 09/06 & 09/07. 2 weeks later (waiting for battery delivery) the remainder of the equipment (batteries) will be installed. Job will be completed by the end of September. Updates to follow. Update on 9/23/23. Everything is on track to be completed by month's end. If it is and it works properly, I'll amend the rating. Won't be able to give them 5 stars since it took them almost 6 months to start the job after the contract was signed and initial deposit made. And they should never have tried to shake me down to finance their business, but they seem now to have realized that and are doing their best to make amends and finish the job in a professional fashion.

We waited a long time to go solar, did a lot of research and decided to go with PPM after interviewing 5 other companies. We have a 10 kW system with 20 kW storage. On most days, with a little planning, we can cool the house comfortably, run our appliances and recharge the storage batteries enough to get through the night—at 95+% grid independence! On sunny days we can top off the charge on our EV. If the grid goes down, we stay powered without having to rely on a generator. Lead time for the project was very long (mostly due to our local utility company) but installation was fast and professionally done. The system looks good and works seamlessly with the grid. PPM has been responsive to the few, initial problems that popped up after startup and they made sure we were happy with the system. Our only complaint with PPM is that they weren’t communicative enough during the overly-long period where we were awaiting approval from the utility company (we were declined twice), but everything worked out. We love being solar powered!

This is a story of service after the sale. I realized one of our panels had gone offline. I called and left a voicemail (and email) after normal working hours. By 9:30 am the next morning, I received a call letting me know a work order was opened. By 1:00 pm that afternoon, technicians had arrived; and by 1:30 pm, that panel was back online after repair under warranty. About 18 hours from discovery to repair. Very satisfied. Thank you.

Power Production installed my solar panels back in 2014. Dealing with the installation crew was an elite experience. I felt confident on choosing this company and now after 3 years and two hurricanes I am relieved I choose d them. The 8.25 kw system I have has earned me a credit with clay electric and the utility company ends up sending me a check every December. Edit This is just a continuation of my review. I figured I should include the after install customer service since that is equally important on a large investment. I developed a leak both inside of my master bedroom and on a fascia thats above my sunroom. I called PPM and builder since it was a new construction to inspect the leak. Leak turned out to be from screws holding down the panels. Kelley from PPM came and inspected the roof and then came and sealed the roof. Now just waiting on them scheduling a roofer to come repair the damage from the leak. So far I see commitment from this company to their customers as well. Update: PPM took responsibility and repaired the roof. Outstanding customer service

Sales will overestimate solar production without taking proper variables into account. The panels are under warranty, but the power the system generates is not. They say the system will generate more than what it actually will and they are under no obligation to meet or exceed that goal with installation. Our system works but only generates 83% of what was advertised. Representative was unhelpful. Stated that the reason we weren't producing enough energy was because the sales guy did not take "shading" into account. We removed most of the "shading" after the proposal hoping for even better output, but we still produced much less than what was originally proposed. Response: The conversation about tree trimming was only that I planned on removing trees in MY yard that posed a danger as they had fallen on my roof in years prior. I was under the impression that removing them would also boost my production beyond the initial proposal. The PPM team recommended that I ask my neighbors to trim their trees which I said I would not do.

What is the average cost of a solar system by size in Jacksonville, FL?

Roof pitch, electricity usage, personal/household needs, orientation, and more are all things taken into consideration when sizing a system for your home. Fortunately, you won’t have to worry about figuring out all the nitty-gritty details, for we have solar experts that can give you a free consultation and quote, and can answer all of your solar-related questions.

The cost of a solar power system in Jacksonville, FL can vary, but the savings are undoubtedly immense. Jacksonville is a fantastic solar resource, and a lot of communities are suitable for solar due to their nature of construction. Unfortunately, JEA currently does not offer a full-scale net metering program. But don’t let this discourage you from going solar, as they do provide limited net metering options. What we do to maximize your savings, is we buffer it with self-consumption and energy storage. This way you’re not relying as heavily on net metering, and you end up getting more of a blended payback.

Tax Credit is Extended!

This is excellent news as it was previously scheduled to end in 2024. That is an additional TEN years for consumers to take advantage of this incredible tax credit program. And not only that – clients that install solar energy systems in 2022 get an increase from 26% to 30%! That’s a nice bonus — a whopping $1,500 for an average solar client!

The current federal solar incentive is currently set at 30%. It is, however, scheduled to decrease in 2033 from 30% down to 26% and from 26% to 22% in 2034. There has never been a better time to go solar, as the incentives remain at their highest, and inflation is slowly creeping the prices of solar installations up.

Benefits of installing a residential solar system in Jacksonville

Still questioning whether or not you should go solar? Here are the top 3 reasons why we believe you should go solar in Jacksonville, FL:

Reduce and eliminate your utility bill

Perhaps one of the most commonly mentioned reasons to go solar is to cut the cost of your electric bill. While this is not the only benefit, it sure is a great one. Imagine never having to worry about that pesky utility bill or any of its fluctuations. This utopia is attainable with solar.

Do the Earth a favor

Would you intentionally set your house on fire? Probably not. The Earth is our home. That is – until we figure out how to pick up and move to a different planet. But that might be a while, so we need to figure out how to live more sustainably and stop participating in practices that are severely harming our home. Solar is one step that a lot of people can take towards a more sustainable future.

Solar has never been cheaper

Yes, it’s true: the cost to go solar has never been lower! With prices and an LCOE (levelized cost of electricity) for solar that’s at an all-time low, plus the addition of federal tax incentives (and other potential grants that are available), you can drastically reduce the price you pay for solar. Shorter payback periods and happier bank accounts are a win-win in our book!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I begin?

You begin by speaking with a reputable, highly reliable, and professional company. That company is PPM Solar! We will work with you through every phase of the process. From consultations to design, to installation and maintenance. PPM is one of the most reviewed solar companies in the country. With a 12-year track record of dedication to customer satisfaction and over 750 projects performed, our work speaks for itself.

How do solar panels work?

The simple answer is: sunlight is absorbed through the panels to produce energy. An inverter in the system then converts that energy into useful electricity. That electricity is sent to the AC breaker panel, with any remaining energy “net-metered” to the grid.

What does the solar panel installation process look like?

After making your decision to go solar, you will to speak with a professional at PPM Solar. They will schedule an assessment on your property to determine which solar system will work best. Designing your system is next! On to financing and permitting.

Once all of these things are completed, the installation will be scheduled. Prior to the installation, you should re-check the site selected for the panels. If you chose ground-mounted panels, double check that there is nothing blocking the sunlight and there is no debris in the area. If you opted for roof mounted panels, the roof must be prepped. Check the shingles or tiles to make sure they are attached securely. Remove anything that might be attached to the roof that may be in the way of installation, such as a satellite dish. Also check for trees that could cast shadows or overhanging limbs. They may need to be pruned prior to installation to ensure maximum energy output.

On the day of solar panel installation, there will be various types of noise. If you have small children who nap during the day or if you work from home, you may want to make different arrangements.

Once the installation is completed, there will be a final inspection and then activation of the system. Now, you are ready to reap all of the benefits going solar brings!

Is solar financing available?

Yes! Solar financing can be obtained several ways. There are conditions and requirements for each option. You can finance through PPM Solar. Secured and unsecured loans, as well as second mortgages are other ways to find financing.  Some Florida utility companies offer financing. There are also programs available like the PACE program and Government Loans through the Federal Housing Administration.

How long do solar panels last?

On average, the designed lifespan of your residential solar system is around 30 years. However, that’s not to say your system won’t work well beyond the recommended service life. In fact, there are some solar home energy systems installed over 40 years ago that are still producing power today.

How much can I save on my electric bill with a solar panel system?

Annually, you can expect to save around $1500 for a 6kW system.

Are there any solar incentives available for homeowners?

Yes! There is currently a 30% Investment Tax Credit (ITC). While there are no state rebates, several counties in Florida do offer rebates.

Does solar increase the value of my home?

In most cases, yes! Studies have shown different calculations for how a home can increase in value.

  • Zillow- on average homes with solar have sold for over 4% more, than those without (depending on location, some could be more, some could be less)
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory indicates a resale value of just under $6k for each kilowatt of installed solar power-so the more kilowatts, the more of an increase

Appraisal Journal states that for every $1 saved in energy costs, the home value increases by $20

How do I prepare my home for solar electricity?

  • Have your roof examined to ensure it will hold the load capacity of the panels and racks
  • Make any repairs needed to the roof
  • Remove any debris, satellite dishes, etc.
  • Trim any trees that may overhang or shade the roof
  • Check for proper insulation, repair any windows or doors that may have leaks as this will decrease the optimum energy output provided by the system
  • Check to make sure your appliances are energy efficient
