Black Prong Resort Goes Solar: Where Nature Meets Clean Energy
Black Prong Resort — a premier equestrian and nature destination nestled within 75,000 acres of Florida’s Goethe State Forest — has completed its largest sustainability investment yet: a 203 kW solar photovoltaic system.

About the project
Black Prong Resort sits on the edge of the Goethe State Forest, roughly 30 miles southwest of Gainesville. Its guests come for horses, trails and quiet — which is exactly why the resort wanted a solar installation that would disappear into the architecture rather than announce itself. PPM Solar designed a 203 kW rooftop array across the multi-faceted roof of the event pavilion, pairing all-black Solarever modules with SolarEdge power optimizers so every panel performs independently regardless of its orientation.
The sustainability journey
A Resort Sustainability Commitment Years in the Making
For Black Prong Resort, sustainability has never been an afterthought — it’s a founding principle. From solar-heated pools to electric guest transportation, every operational decision reflects a deep respect for the land and the ecosystems that surround it.
The new 203 kW solar system is the natural next chapter. Spanning 452 high-efficiency panels across the resort’s event pavilion, it is expected to offset nearly three-quarters of the resort’s total electricity consumption — and to pay for itself within five years.

In their words
The People Behind the Decision to Go Solar
At Black Prong, nature is at the heart of the guest experience. Surrounded by the Goethe State Forest, our guests come here to escape the pace of city life and reconnect with the outdoors. Investing in solar was a logical extension of our commitment to preserving the land while building a more sustainable future for the resort. Every improvement we make is guided by the belief that luxury hospitality and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
Solar is an investment in the future of Black Prong and in the experience we want every guest to have. It allows us to continue growing responsibly, reduce our environmental impact, and preserve the quiet, natural setting that makes this place so special. We’re excited to keep expanding our sustainability initiatives so future generations can enjoy this landscape just as much as our guests do today.
Black Prong was a very special project for PPM Solar, standing out from both technological and architectural perspectives. From selecting SolarEdge equipment capable of performing seamlessly across a challenging, multi-directional roof configuration for 25 years to developing a visually refined layout, the project allowed us to maximize the available roof area while preserving the aesthetic character of this nature-focused property. We are proud to support Black Prong’s commitment to environment and sustainability.
Why solar matters for resort guests
Today’s travelers — particularly those drawn to nature-based and equestrian destinations — increasingly seek lodging that reflects their own environmental values. Black Prong’s solar investment positions the resort as a leader in sustainable hospitality across Florida’s Nature Coast.

Frequently asked questions
Commercial Solar for Florida Resorts & Hospitality
How much of a resort’s electricity can rooftop solar realistically offset?
It depends on roof area and load profile. At Black Prong, 452 panels on a single pavilion roof are projected to offset 73.8% of the resort’s total consumption — hospitality loads (pools, kitchens, HVAC) run during daylight hours, which is when solar produces most. A site assessment and shading analysis tells you the number for your property before you spend anything.
How long does a commercial solar system take to pay for itself in Florida?
Black Prong’s system is expected to pay for itself within five years. Payback is driven by utility rates, system cost, the federal investment tax credit and accelerated depreciation (MACRS). See the 48E commercial solar credit explained and the December 2027 construction deadline.
How much does a 200 kW commercial solar system cost?
Pricing depends on roof type, electrical service, interconnection requirements and equipment, so we quote each project from drawings and utility data rather than a per-watt rule of thumb. PPM Solar provides a fixed-price proposal after a free commercial solar assessment; commercial solar pricing in 2026 is the lowest it has ever been.
Why use SolarEdge optimizers on a complex roof?
The pavilion roof faces several directions. Module-level optimizers let each panel operate at its own maximum power point, so shading or orientation on one section doesn’t drag down the rest — and the system can be monitored panel by panel for 25 years through PPM Solar’s monitoring service.
Does solar change the look of a nature-focused property?
Not when it’s designed for it. All-black modules, a low-profile rail system and a layout aligned to the roof planes keep the array visually quiet. Guests see a green metal roof and a dark, even surface — not hardware. Where glare is a concern (airports, highways, neighbors), we also run solar glare and reflectance studies.
Can solar panels damage a metal roof or cause leaks?
Standing-seam metal roofs like Black Prong’s are among the best solar surfaces: clamps attach to the seams with no roof penetrations. On other roof types, flashed and sealed attachments carry a workmanship warranty. More in Can solar panels cause roof leaking?
What happens during a hurricane?
Every system is engineered to the site’s Florida Building Code design wind speed, attachments are pull-tested, and we inspect after major storms. Our hurricane preparation guide covers what owners should do before and after a storm.
Can a resort add battery storage or EV charging later?
Yes. SolarEdge inverters are storage-ready, and hospitality properties increasingly pair solar with commercial battery storage for outage resilience and destination EV chargers for guests — both can be added in a later phase without redoing the array.
Is a rural resort eligible for a USDA REAP grant?
Rural small businesses — including hospitality properties outside metro areas — are often eligible for REAP grants covering a share of a solar project’s cost. The rules changed in 2026; read USDA REAP grant rules have changed: build first, apply later and our REAP overview.
Who installs and services the system?
PPM Solar’s own crews — not subcontractors. We are a licensed Florida solar and electrical contractor (EC13008767, CVC57344) and NABCEP-certified, installing since 2009. See our installation process, awards and certifications, and the commercial O&M guide.
